"Emmaus Heroes... Conquering Homelessness"

Kayla dropped out of high school after her junior year. A hard worker, she managed to support herself for several years working multiple part-time jobs in retail and food service. Eventually she moved into her boyfriend's apartment.

Kayla was in between jobs when their relationship ended abruptly and she was forced to move out. Shortly after she learned that she was pregnant. Kayla spent a few months couch surfing at friends' apartments and looking for work before she turned to Emmaus for help. She moved into the Emmaus Family House and started taking GED classes at the Bethel Business Center. Kayla gave birth to her daughter, Eva at a nearby hospital last fall. "I felt like I had failed my daughter," Kayla described how she felt when she returned to the Emmaus Family House with Ava. Shortly after Ava's birth last fall, Kayla finished her GED and moved into the Bethel transitional apartments.

Today she is enrolled in the iHealth program at Northern Essex Community College and Ava attends Early Head Start. Now 24 years old, Kayla is clear about her goals - in five years she wants to be settled in a career as a Phlebotomist or EKG technician and living a peaceful life with her daughter in a nice little house.
