"Emmaus Heroes... Conquering
Kayla dropped out of high school after her
junior year. A hard worker, she managed to
support herself for several years working
multiple part-time jobs in retail and food
service. Eventually she moved into her
Kayla was in between jobs when their
relationship ended abruptly and she was
forced to move out. Shortly after she
learned that she was pregnant. Kayla spent a
few months couch surfing at friends'
apartments and looking for work before she
turned to Emmaus for help. She moved into
the Emmaus Family House and started taking
GED classes at the Bethel Business Center.
Kayla gave birth to her daughter, Eva at a
nearby hospital last fall. "I felt like I
had failed my daughter," Kayla described how
she felt when she returned to the Emmaus
Family House with Ava. Shortly after Ava's
birth last fall, Kayla finished her GED and
moved into the Bethel transitional
Today she is enrolled in the iHealth program at Northern Essex Community
College and Ava attends Early Head Start.
Now 24 years old, Kayla is clear about her
goals - in five years she wants to be
settled in a career as a Phlebotomist or EKG
technician and living a peaceful life with
her daughter in a nice little house.
