Text Box: Emmaus, Inc. has assisted over 17,000 children, women and men out of homelessness and into permanent housing, jobs, and self-sufficiency. Well above the national average, 89 cents of every dollar that Emmaus raises goes directly to life-saving programs for the homeless. Over 400 volunteers, 150 businesses, 125 faith communities, plus 5,000 individual donors contribute time, services, and over $350,000 in private gifts each year.
In 1989, Emmaus’ founding executive director, Tom Bentley, completed the first Cycle for Shelter, a 1200-mile journey from Georgia to Massachusetts. Along the way, Tom visited more than 100 programs that provided shelter and assistance to homeless and impoverished families and individuals, speaking with Text Box: human service providers, church groups, community activists, and government officials. These discussions, along with Tom’s observations, inspired the Board and staff of Emmaus to create pioneering programs for the homeless in our region. Today we operate eleven programs that assist 1700 homeless women, men and children annually. Since that first ride in 1989, well over 4,000 cyclists and volunteers have helped Emmaus raise over $500,000 through the Cycle for Shelter.
